The 48 Hour Film Project comes to Chicago on the weekend of August 9 – 11, 2013. Filmmakers from all over the Chicago area will compete to see who can make the best short film in only 48 hours. The winning film will go up against films from around the world.

The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which filmmaking teams have literally 48 hours to complete a movie. All writing, shooting, editing and scoring must be completed in just 48 hours. On Friday night, August 9th, teams are assigned a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre that must be included in their film. 48 hours later, on Sunday August 11th at 7:30pm the film must be complete and turned in.

Next? On Wednesday, August 14th and Thursday, August 15th, the films will be screened on the big screen of the Music Box Theatre at 3733 N. Southport Ave, Chicago, Il, 60613. Don’t miss the screenings!

In 2013 the 48HFP will visit more than 120 cities where more than 60,000 people will make short films. The Project has spread to the four corners of the globe as filmmakers from Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas will compete to see who can make the best short film in a weekend.

The 48 Hour Film Project’s mission, according to their website, is to advance filmmaking and promote filmmakers. Through its festival/competition, the Project encourages filmmakers and would-be filmmakers to get out there and make movies. The tight deadline of 48 hours puts the focus squarely on the filmmakers—emphasizing creativity and teamwork skills. While the time limit places an unusual restriction on the filmmakers, it is also liberating by putting an emphasis on “doing” instead of “talking.”

This year, teams will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Once the initial registration is complete, teams will be added to a waiting list.  Teams must register on or before Monday, July 15, to get the early bird rate of $140. Regular registration is $160. If teams register after Tuesday, July 30 they must pay a rate of $175. Enter today! Space is limited.
